how to master the five key areas of job searching.

Without further ado, let’s get started!

Key Area #1: Career Strategy

The first step to a successful job search is developing an effective career strategy. A well-developed career plan will help you establish your long-term objectives and take the necessary steps to reach them.

This includes defining your target role, determining which industries you’re interested in, and researching companies that match your interests. It’s important to take the time to understand yourself, what you want out of a career, the best culture fit for you and how your skills can be best utilized to match your targeted companies & opportunities.

It’s also important to identify your career strengths and weaknesses, determine which skill sets are transferable, and to which industries and opportunities, and create an action plan to develop any necessary skills.

Let’s explore these fundamental principles of an effective career strategy in more detail:

Defining Your Target Role

Before embarking on your job search, it’s important to determine which roles and opportunities you wish to pursue. This could mean a specific career path within an industry or a different field altogether. We need to clearly identify these areas in advance.

The key is to identify your interests and skills that directly relate to the industries and opportunities you want to pursue. As well, correctly positioning your skills, background and experience speaking directly to the job descriptions of the role you want to pursue.

Determining Your Interests

Once you have identified your target roles and opportunities, it’s important to determine which industries or companies are of interest to you and which ones you are best qualified for. We will help you identify your top 5 companies to target. We will also discuss with you other closely related industries and vertical markets your skills and background would also translate to expanding your reach and casting a much wider net. We can then research who are the leaders and decision makers overseeing these roles and get their direct contact information and give that to you along with the soft outreach template so you can begin reaching out to these leaders to make contact and have direct dialogue with them.

It’s also essential to familiarize yourself with the latest trends and technologies in these industries.

Researching Companies

Now that you know which industries you’re interested in, it’s time to do some research on specific companies within those sectors. This includes understanding their mission and values, as well as their size, culture, and hiring practices. Having a clear understanding and window into these companies will be essential to understanding if they will be a good fit for you and your values.

You should also get a feel for what employees typically do (day in the life) at the company. By researching companies, you can identify which ones align with your interests and career goals.

Identifying Your Career Strengths and Weaknesses

It’s important to be honest with yourself and evaluate your skill sets objectively.

Identify which of your skills are transferable to the role you wish to pursue and the areas where you need to develop. This will help you create an action plan to fill any gaps in your knowledge or experience.

Creating an Action Plan

Once you have identified your career strengths and weaknesses, it’s time to create a plan of action.

This should include strategies on how to acquire the skills necessary for your target role and any other qualifications necessary for the job. You should also create a timeline for when you hope to accomplish your goals and check in with yourself regularly to ensure you’re on track.

So now that we have explored the fundamentals of an effective career strategy, let’s move on to resume-building.

Key Area #2: Resume-Building

When applying for jobs, having a professionally written resume is absolutely essential. A well-crafted resume which speaks to the job descriptions you are pursuing will help you stand out from the competition and present your specific skills, experience and background directly related to these opportunities. We must correctly brand you based upon the job descriptions and how your experience and skills correctly align to the opportunity.

But what exactly should be included in a great resume? Let’s find out:

Include Relevant Information

The most important part of your resume is correctly branding yourself for the opportunity. Based upon the job description your resume must highlight your relevant work experience, skills and background directly related. Including correct keywords, phrases and accomplishments that highlight your experience in these areas. A corporate recruiter looks a resume for 6 seconds, if they cannot quickly and easily find this detail in 6 seconds they will move onto the next resume. We must make their jobs easy to quickly find the relevant information they are looking for or they will pass you by.

Aside from the relevant information like education, skills, work experience your resume MUST… and I mean MUST speak to the job you are applying for.

Y
our resume is one of the most important documents in a job search. The goal of your resume is to quickly help employers learn who you are and whether your skills and experiences match the position you’re applying for.

Add all relevant must-have (and nice-to-have) skills from the job description to the “Skills” section of your resume, if you possess these skills detail how you have used these skills within your last 2 roles as the Top bullet points.

So, to recap, aligning your resume to the job description is valuable because:

  1. It makes your resume more relevant and better demonstrates your qualifications for the role.
  2. You will grab the attention of recruiters and hiring managers by using the same phrases and terminology in your resume that they are using in their job description.
  3. Your chances of being selected for an interview will increase.

Formatting Your Resume

Your resume should be easy to read and organized in a correct and professional way. Recruiters like things simple. If your resume is hard to read, too busy, content in the margins, colors, a photo of yourself, etc. you’re making their eyes move in multiple directions to try and gather the information they are looking for. The harder your resume is to read and quickly find the details they are looking for, the less likely they will read it. Keep it simple!

To ensure your resume is readable, use a font size that is between 10 and 12 points. You should also avoid using fancy fonts or graphics, as this can be distracting. Unless you are a director level or above, your resume should be no more than 2 pages. Cover letters are no longer even looked at. Recruiters do not read them, they shred them.

Finally, make sure your resume is tailored to the specific job you are applying for, and be sure to proofread it carefully before submitting it.

It can’t be stressed enough how important resume-building is, so be sure to take your time and put in the effort necessary to create an effective one. You Only get one shot at this opportunity.

And now that we have covered the basics of resume-building, let’s move on to LinkedIn profile optimization.

Key Area #3: LinkedIn Profile Optimization

In today’s digital world, having a LinkedIn profile that correctly brands you and proactively answers all the questions recruiters, sources and hiring managers are trying to answer about you is essential. LinkedIn has become the #1 source of hire for most all company’s today. This popular platform is used by employers to source for potential candidates, so your profile should reflect and speak directly to the questions they trying to answer about you before they take next steps and contact you for an interview. If your profile doesn’t reflect your brand or speak to the industries and opportunities you are interested in and completely answer all of their questions in advance, you will not be contacted for interviews. Correctly aligning yourself, listing the correct titles based upon the opportunities your pursuing, answering the culture fit question and knowing how recruiters are searching for candidates using LinkedIn is essential to career success.

Optimizing Your Profile Picture

At the top of your page is your profile picture, is one of the first things employer’s notice. Make sure it’s a recent and professional and appropriate picture of you. This is their first impression of you. Let’s make a good first impression on them! Also, in the grey area at the top above your profile picture, replace that grey template with an image of something you like or which gives you inspiration or has meaning to you. This tells recruiters that you actually took the time to customize your profile and tells them you put time, energy and thought into your profile.

Writing Your About Section

The LinkedIn About section is your chance to shine and separate yourself from the crowd. This section is very important. The primary focus of this section is to answer the culture fit question. Will you be a good culture fit within their organization? Beyond talking about your experience, accomplishments, projects, accolades and certifications, recruiters want to know more specifically about you and what makes you different. What do your department heads say about you, what do your colleagues and working groups say about you? This detail will give them a better glimpse into why you are different.

Be sure to use phrases and terminology which are used in the job description. This will grab the attention of the recruiters and increase your chances of getting interviews.

You should also include a call to action such as “contact me for more information” or “let’s connect and discuss how I can help your company.” This will give employers a clear indication that you are ready and willing to explore the possibilities of a new position.

Also, don’t forget to proofread and spell check your summary before submitting it to ensure that there are no grammar or spelling mistakes. This may seem small, but it can make a huge difference in how employers view you as a candidate.

Adding Relevant Content

Adding relevant content to your profile is essential.

Consider adding articles, videos, or other media that showcase your skills or experience. This may include presentations you’ve given, research papers you’ve written, blog posts, or anything else relevant to your industry or the job you are applying for.

You should also include any awards, certifications, or other accomplishments — showing employers that you have achieved success in your field and making it easier for them to trust in your skills and abilities.

Networking and Engaging with Others

Don’t forget to network on LinkedIn! That’s really what this platform is for. Networking is how you will land your next great job. 80% of all jobs never get posted, so if you’re not actively networking and aggressively reaching outbound to not only people in your industry or direct connections, but also trying to connect and open dialogue with leaders in companies that you would like to work for but don’t know anyone, your chances of landing a great job are dramatically reduced.

Connect with people in your industry, join relevant groups, and follow companies that interest you. Building relationships and giving employers the impression that you are an active member of your field will help you stand out.

It’s also important to stay engaged with others on the platform by liking or commenting on posts and articles. This will help you stay up to date with industry trends and show employers that you are definitely involved in and engaged with your industry.

Remember, having an optimized profile can help employers understand who you are and what you can offer them, giving you a better chance of landing the job you want!

Now it’s time for our second-to-last key area: interview skills.

Key Area #4: Interview Skills

Interviewing is a crucial step in the job search process and can be intimidating. With proper preparation, you can make sure your interviews go smoothly and give yourself the best chance of landing your dream job.

Let's go over some tips to help you prepare for your next interview:

Research the Company

Long before you have an interview, it’s important to research the company. This may involve looking into their current projects, getting a better understanding of their mission and values, and researching industry trends that relate to them.

Having this knowledge will help you stand out in an interview. You will show employers that you have a genuine interest in the company and it’s work. It will also help you answer questions more confidently and thoroughly.

Practice Interview Questions

You should also practice answering interview questions so that you feel prepared when the time comes. Make sure to brush up on common interview questions, such as why you’re interested in the job or how you handle difficult situations.

It’s also a good idea to prepare answers to questions about your skills and experience. Think of specific examples that demonstrate those abilities, such as how you handled a difficult customer or the most successful project you’ve worked on.

Be prepared for situational or behavioral based questions. There’s a technique that most all employers use called STAR. Situation, Task, Action Result. They will ask you very targeted questions and they are looking for a very targeted answer. You must do well in the initial interviews, or you will not move forward in their process. Anything less than receiving an “Offer” is not success in the interview process.

Practicing interview questions will help you feel more confident in the actual interview and give employers a better understanding of who you are, your real value and what you can bring to the table.

Foster Within Yourself a Sense of Confidence and Flexibility

Finally, it’s important to go into an interview with an overall aura of confidence and flexibility. Make sure you have a good understanding of the job requirements and be ready to answer questions about how your experience makes you a good fit in the organization.

However, at the same time, be open-minded about what the job may entail and be willing to adjust your expectations if necessary. Without a doubt, employers will appreciate someone who is confident in their abilities and open to change and new opportunities.

So, as of this moment, we’ve covered the basics of career strategy, resume-building, LinkedIn optimization, and interview skills. It’s time to cover the last but certainly not the least-important key area: Networking.

Key Area #5: Networking

Networking is an essential skill for any job search and can be remarkably valuable. Not only can it help you gain more industry knowledge and make connections, but it can also lead to job opportunities that may not have been available otherwise.

Here are some tips on how to make networking work for you:

Reach Out to People In Your Field

It’s important to reach out to people in your field and build relationships with them. This can be as simple as exchanging emails or connecting on LinkedIn.

Do some research beforehand so that you can have an interesting conversation about the industry. Also, send personalized messages to each person, and include why you’re interested in connecting
with them.

Attend Networking Events

Networking events are a great way to meet people and learn more about the industry you’re interested in. These events typically offer opportunities to engage in conversations, which can help you gain insight into different topics and make connections with potential employers or mentors.

Make sure to bring copies of your resume and business cards with you so that people have something to remember you by. You should also be prepared to ask questions and engage in conversations, even if it initially feels awkward.

Follow Up with People You’ve Met

Once you have met people at networking events, be sure to follow up with them! Even sending a thank you email or checking in a few weeks later to see how they are doing can make a huge difference.

This will show that you are invested in the relationship and make them more likely to keep you in mind if they have or hear of any job opportunities.

So, in summary, we’ve gone through the essential key components of a successful job search. We’ve looked at all five (5) areas critical to quickly landing a great new job, how to build and optimize your resume, developing your career strategy & direction, create an impactful LinkedIn profile, improve your interview skills, and build meaningful connections through networking.

These tips should help you get started on your journey to finding the job that’s right for you.
