Despite the current economic crisis it is totally possible to not only get your dream job but also making more money.

When you’re searching the internet for job listings, do you really think you will find your dream job there?  Chances are very slim that you will not! Between 70% and 80% percent of jobs are not published publicly and 85% percent of jobs are found through good old fashion networking. Yet, we feel compelled to spend the majority of our time searching on job boards.  Here are some other ways you can land a great new job and make more money in the process:

Dust off your Resume and LinkedIn Profile.

It’s not a bad thing if you were (or currently are) unemployed due to the pandemic. But make sure you highlight on your resume and LinkedIn profile how you spent that time off.

What paid or unpaid projects did you take on? Any side work? Volunteer work? Online courses to further enhance your professional skills?

Anything you did to benefit yourself or your community is worth mentioning, and will make you stand out from other candidates.

Customize each application.

Each online job application needs to be customized to the job advertised. Failure to understand the skills needed will result in your application landing in the dreaded “black hole”.

Up your Networking Game.

When you are networking don’t start your message indicating that you’re desperate for work. Let the conversation flow naturally. Send new year e-greetings to former colleagues. Ask how they’re doing and let them know you’re thinking of them. The goal is to keep your relationships intact and always be networking. Steve Jobs said it best Most people never pick up the phone and call. Most people never ask, and that’s what separates the people who do things from the people who dream about them”.

Be Confident

As a job seeker, you need to remember that you have skills you need to land a great new job. Don’t worry if your resume or your application isn’t perfect — it’s more important that they’re found and read by the hiring manager.

In the world of video interviewing, you’ll want to be extra prepared. When you prepare properly and don’t try to “wing it,” your confidence will naturally come across in your tone, inflection and selection of words when you answer the questions.

Invest in YOU

Hire a career coach that has proven experience working internally as a Corporate Sr. Recruiter or Human Resources Business Partner.  Career Coaches with this experience can help you with the following:

  • A career coach can accelerate your job search given their knowledge and knowhow educating you on ATS systems, employment branding and social media, compensation conversations and mock interviewing
  • A career coach can help you develop a solid job & career search plan.
  • A career coach can show you how to invest in yourself.

Investing in yourself and career means your serious and committed to your own Success! Did you invest in yourself for college, certifications, real estate license or any other method to increase your opportunities? If the answer is Yes, then why would investing in a career coach be any different? Even (and especially) if you’re on a tight budget, spending the money and investing in yourself can light a fire under you. It will make you more focused and more directed, because the clock is ticking and the coach’s meter is running. Then, your commitment will be palpable to everyone from networking allies to recruiters and hiring managers.

If you’re not willing to invest in yourself, why would anyone else be willing to?
